President Harry S. Truman believed possession of the atomic bomb would strengthen the American position in negotiations with the Soviet Union. He reportedly commented that it would make the Soviets “more manageable” in Europe. The bomb therefore became a symbol of American power and contributed to Soviet suspicions that the USA intended to dominate post-war Europe. Although the bomb was not the main cause of the Cold War, it increased mistrust between the two superpowers and helped create an atmosphere of tension and rivalry.

However, the bomb did not have the dramatic effect that many Americans expected. Joseph Stalin already knew about the project through Soviet espionage and was largely unperturbed by the American monopoly. Rather than changing Soviet policy, he accelerated the USSR’s own nuclear weapons programme. More importantly, Stalin possessed the Red Army, with around five million troops stationed across Eastern Europe, giving him immediate military influence on the ground. The atomic bomb did nothing to prevent the creation of Soviet-controlled communist satellite states in countries such as Poland, Hungary and Romania. As a result, many historians argue that the bomb increased suspicion but did not stop Soviet expansion in Eastern Europe.
